While mouth is the initial point of our digestive system, the liver is its largest and heaviest glandular organ. It is located in the upper right and partly left side of the abdominal cavity, below the right side of rib cage. All blood coming from veins of the digestive system, pancreas and spleen passes through liver. The liver takes an active part in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It is also the point where harmful substances are detoxified and drugs metabolized. The liver daily secretes 600 to 1,200 ml of bile. A part is secreted to the duodenum directly, while the other part remains deposited in the gall bladder until further needed by the duodenum. When ingested food reaches the upper part of the digestive system, the gall bladder starts to discharge as well, particularly so if fatty food has reached the duodenum. If the exit muscle is strongly contracted, or the quantity of bile is insufficient, the gall bladder may have difficulties in discharging its contents.
