Periodontitis is the inflammation of the periodontium caused by bacteria that infect the roots of teeth and the surrounding gum crevices, producing bleeding, and pus formation. Progressing of bacteria may cause a gradual loss of bone and the periodontal tissues that support the teeth, and result in their loss. After taking active substances, such as antibiotics, ant-inflammatory drugs, and preparations that support the epithelialization, the inflammation decreases. Unpleasant symptoms, such as pain, burning, bad breath, and the like, cease to exist as well.

There are also some natural substances whose components are known to aid in preventing and healing unpleasant symptoms caused by aphthae and periodontitis.
