What causes coughing?
As you perhaps know, cough is an explosive expiration that provides a very important defense mechanism. However, when excessive, it is also one of the most common symptoms of many diseases.
Cough is developed in several phases. It is interesting to note that a speed of expelled air in the laryngeal opening in an act of coughing can reach as many as 540 km/hour. In a real world it is a speed of the strongest hurricane.
A cough stimulus is developed in epithelial nerve endings in the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract. Various external stimuli, accumulation of bronchial secretion, or a localized pathological process of the walls of the upper respiratory tract, caused by a variety of inflammations, allergies, degenerative processes, etc., may induce an act of coughing.
Cough provides the most important protective mechanism for clearing the respiratory organs of infected and viscous secretions and foreign material, such as dust particles, and foreign objects that can hinder or obstruct the upper respiratory tract. However, it can be harmful in many ways. For instance, a stream of air can transport the phlegm from one part of the lungs to another, or even to the environment of an infected patient, thus causing the disease to spread. A strong and often dry cough is always annoying. Apart from making a patient weak and aggravating his illness, it also puts a mechanical pressure on lungs, heart, and blood circulation. Coughing puts a strain on a patient and deteriorates his illness, and measures should be provided against it.
Treatment of cough is primarily symptomatic. A treatment of dry, nonproductive cough involves the so-called antitussives. These are drugs that bring relief to a coughing patient by inhibiting a cough reflex development. Another medications, the so-called expectorants, are used when cough is caused by accumulation of phlegm and other fluids from lungs or throat passages. They assist in expelling the phlegm by coughing.
